>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, november 17th. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn, good morning to you. we are starting out with some fog all around the north bay and the folks. visibility has been redeuce today just nothing, a quarter of a file up in sonoma county. on the coast about 9-mile visibility. i expect the fog to move around the bay this morning. watch out for that. comes are cool, 37 santa rosa, mid-and upper 40s elsewhere. by noontime it will be turning sunny all around the bay with low 50s bay and inland.

a nice, fall day today but changes are in store which involves your umbrella for a couple days. upcoming work week. >> thank you, lisa. a shooting in san francisco south of market district early this morning has sent two people to a local trauma center. that shooting near sixth and jesse streets happened just after 2:00 this morning. no word yet on the condition of the victims. police are investigating what led up to this violence. we will bring you those details as new information becomes available. a dispute over bart's tentative union contract is heating up this weekend. but in a new development both sides have agreed to meet tomorrow. bart's board of directors says an error gives union more paid family leave that was negotiated. union members have already voted to approve the deal. abc7 news reporter sergio has the latest in the bart saga. >> reporter: after crunching the numbers the unions are responding to friday night's

bart's board meeting. >> we are absolutely horrified with the district after everything that went on, a contentious bargaining situations, two strikes and two people killed, that they would take this action. >> it's provision that gives bart employees six weeks of paid medical leave to take care of a sick family member. >> this is not a good option. >> the board says it will cost $44.2 million over the next four years, a figure the unions dispute. >> we're doing our own cost estimates that says it's about 1.2 each year for the four years. >> still, the board says section 4.8 was not supposed to be part of the agreement and only included because of a clerical error.

but yet there's signatures of the officials. they want to go back to the unions to fix this mistake butt unions say this deal is done. >> we signed an agreement. we are had an agreement and that's what we expect to be honored. >> this week both sides said the chance of a strike is pretty slim. the plan for now is for members of the yawn to meet with bart management on monday. that's when we see the latest twist in this more than six-month contract negotiation will be handled. abc7 news. well, what about bart riders? they say they are concerned about this new twist, but are mixed about who is to blame. >> if there's a clause in the contract that says they are allowed to go back and look at it in case of mistakes, then yes. i'm not a legal expert but i would say otherwise no. >> you can't just cancel something you already signed. if you already signed it, then that shows it went into effect. they should have had somebody overlooking it before anybody actually signed the contract.

>> well, one thing everyone agrees on is a bart strike would be the worst possible outcome. part of highway 116 is scheduled to be reopened after being closed overnight following an injury accident in sonoma county. it happened at 4:15 yesterday afternoon west of petaluma. a driver crashed into a power pole, bringing down the wires and causing several spot fires. fires were quickly put out and pg&e has been working throughout the night to repair that pole. new this morning, a close call for several young oakley teenagers who had to be treated for alcohol poisoning last night. an adult found them so intoxicated one girl was unconscious. oakley police say a group of five girls, ages 13 to 15, somehow got their hands on a bottle of vodka and drink from it at a local park. they returned to one girl's home on canopy lane, and the parents

were not home. when one passed out, the others called for help. the local emergency crew took three girls to a local hospital. they are going to be okay. they are looking into how they got the vodka in the first place. we are learning a former bay area resident is one of the people found shot to death in a murder-suicide in fresno. the victim and suspect were a recently married couple. man was a resident of hayward before moving to fresno. police say they found no signs of a physical struggle. the santa clara county sheriff's office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a woman dead. it was early yesterday morning when the sound of breaking glass, pounding and yelling were heard come from a tryplex on cleveland avenue. three sheriff's deputies arrived and confronted by the woman. authorities say she had a knife. >> but i hear only the woman's voice, like a lead yell and say

can i have the kids? and i don't want to repeat it. after one miniheard boom, boom, boom, and i awake. >> deputies ordered the woman to drop the knife. they refused. they fired and she died at the scene. >> a save water supply is the concern now of the survivors of the typhoon haiyan after the disaster. nearly 1200 people remain missing, more than 3600 are confirmed dead. more relief supplies are on the way for the nearly 2 million people displaced. the u.s. has already delivered some 623,000 pounds of supplies. china has just agreed to send a medical team and two million dollars in aid. philippines president says he's going to camp out in tacloban, the city hardest hit.

he plans to stay until enough aid arrives. he is facing harsh criticism over his administration's disaster readiness and response. here in the bay area hundreds of families with ties to the region gathered last night to share stories and information. abc7 news reporter story. >> welcome to all of us with families and friends affected by the typhoon. >> everyone at this special mass at the church has two things in common. most are from the tacloban region of the philippines and they have all been impacted by the typhoon. >> my family is across the ocean. >> loss and sorrow fill this church because what many call

their home doesn't look like their memories. this woman lost her sister and relatives. her grief is overwhelming. >> i don't know what to do. every day i think i wish i could go home and see them, see my sister. >> just getting to the devastated area isn't easy and getting information out is almost as hard. >> thousands of taclobans live here in the bay area and many have still not been able to reach their loved ones in the philippines. >> roberto still doesn't know if his daughter is alive. >> the situation you know, if she's okay or what. >> he's taking the prayers from tonight with him thursday when he flies to the philippines to look for his six-year-old himself. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. volunteers from the bay area

are on their way to the area. nurses doctors and technicians left from sfo last night. they are basically flying into the unknown. >> the communication is very poor coming out of the most affected areas. so we've heard very little. but we have heard that there's a lot of medical need and there's a lot of need for medical supplies. >> they will set up a medical clinic. other teams from kaiser permanente will be leaving in the next few weeks. happening today the national federation of filipino american associations will collect canned food, clothing, toiletries and other relief supplies for the victims of the philippines typhoon. it take place starting at 3:30 this afternoon at san jose's north side community center on north sixth street. cash donations will also be accepted by the red cross. abc7 news is hosting a fundraiser to help typhoon victims tomorrow. you will be able to make donations to the red cross relief fund through a live hotline from 11:00 a.m. to 11:35

p.m.. we hope you will be able to contribute. we will have all the details tomorrow when the fundraiser begins. two years after the shooting rampage at the lee high quarry in cupertino, the abc7 i-team is getting new insight into what led to the tragedy. we have interviewed the son. he gives personal account of life with his father before he shot nine of his co-workers, killing three. >> what made your dad snap? >> everybody has suspicions. but -- >> what are yours? >> obviously somebody either made him mad. i think somebody made him mad because what else could it be? >> he tells dan that his father was a private man, but that he kept detailed records of his problems at work. what can we learn to prevent future tragedies like this? a special i-team interview

her talent. >> i think her mother must be very special because obviously this child has grown up without feeling any limitations. >> lonnie was born in china and adopted by an american mother when she was 13 months old. when she was eight she developed solo sis. eye when your spine twins to curve sideways instead of straight. >> so my mom put me in a few ballet classes because she helped me it would find alignment. then i started farming like in the nut cracker and stuff and i started to like it. >> so much so that she left her home in massachusetts to study with marina and the alonzo king line ballet that. program is offered by dominican university in san rafael. she practices in the morning in san francisco and returns to san rafael to do her academic work in the afternoon. >> i don't want to be like a hassle to my choreographers, i want to be easy. i want them to challenge me and not like hold back. >> she knows more about it than

make-a-wish foundation. ucsf doctors took part in a fundraiser to support children fighting cancer yesterday. they went bald to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer research. the doctor is the chief of pediatric oncology at ucsf children's hospital. one young patient and his father spoke about fighting cancer. >> they are the bad guys and i want him to take the bad guys out. >> if specific research that was done at ucsf as a result of grants like those save their child's life. >> he and his dad joined the fundraising effort. more than $22,000 from the head-shaving event about go to a foundation to fund research programs. meteorologist lisa argen here now u say we may finally

get some rain? >> yes, looking pretty likely, especially tuesday into wednesday that. is some good news. much welcome rain. let's take a look at live doppler 7hd this morning. there is fog out there. the only areas that are clear really mountain view and san jose. elsewhere partly cloudy skies and poor visibility, especially up in the north bay. so if you are headed out early this morning, not only is the visibility a problem, but it is cold. we have 37 degrees up in santa rosa. here's a look from our roof camera where it looks pretty good right there but there are clouds float be around san francisco. 54 oakland. 50 on the coast. a live look from our emeryville camera. you can see the chilly numbers up in santa rosa, dropped to 36 right now. but over in napa it is 45. we have fog from santa rosa, napa and novato. those typical spots. fairfield 44. we are looking at partly cloudy skies, concord and livermore numbers in the mid-40s to near 50 trees. here's a look from our

exploratorium camera where you will have the fog this morning in san francisco and it will burn back for a pretty nice day today. so aside from that we will be looking at a sunny afternoon with temperatures in the 60s. but increasing clouds for your monday in advance of the next system that will bring rain. in fact, a couple of pieces of energy allowing for rain to extend into the middle of next week. so that's some good news. we look at our fall forecast you will notice this morning it's going to take a little time but by midmorning, 11:00, 12:00, it should be burning back all the way to the coastline and that will leave sunshine. but temperatures are going to stay just around where they should be, low to mid-60s. so high pressure keeping us dry today. then into tomorrow we will see the increasing clouds throughout the afternoon so temperatures a little bit cooler. but here's the next system as it pushes in on tuesday. so the timing on it, late monday up in sonoma county, beginning to see some rain. 10:00 monday night.

just north of point reyes. as we go into the overnight hours. by the early morning commute on tuesday, yep, we've got rain around here. right through 11:00. some light showers. focus of the activity continues to be the north bay. but as we go into tuesday afternoon, still a few light showers and then by wednesday the main piece of energy still up to the north but we do expect some showers. that's south of the golden gate. anything less than the north bay less than that. 65 today under sunny skies. 63 in sunnyvale. high temperatures in the upper 50s from pacifica to half moon bay. san francisco coming in once again in the low 60s. a breezy afternoon there. numbers in the north bay, sonoma 64, as well as vallejo. near east bay look for 62 today in newark and after the fog burns back, more mid-60s in the east bay valley.

for temperatures once again to make it into the 60s. low to mid-60s around the bay. cooler than that at the coast. the onshore flow continues and temperatures in the 630s inland. we look for the fog to thicken tomorrow and rain is on the way. we look at your accuweather seven-day forecast coming up. carolyn. >> thank you. new this morning the navy said an aerial drone miss functioned and struck an aerial ship during training maneuvers off the coast. two sailors suffered minor burns during a guided missile cruiser. it happened yesterday. the mishap occurred while the uss chancellorville was testing it's combat weapons system. the drone malfunctioned when it was launch to test the ship's radar. so far the navy has no estimate of the damage. n.a.s.a. seas newest mars explore is set to blast off tomorrow afternoon on a ten-month journey to the red planet. more than half the components of the maiden spacecraft were build right here in the bay area. chad meyers has a look at the

mission. >> for scientists or space enthusiasts alike. mars continues to amaze. ice no surprise the red planet is the subject of five active n.a.s.a. missions, three in orbit and two on the surface. and liftoff of the atlas 5 with curiosity. the planetary puzzle about mars. >> you probably heard of curiosity. recover studying climate on the ground. and the sixth mission is hoping to study mars from above and answer a 4 billion-year-old question, what made the fourth planet from the sun turn red and barren. >> it's gone from the desert and geological world, kind of boring rocks, to this exciting, blooming world with a his instrument that includes warm, wet times, climate change, landslides, ice sheets, buried ice, unbelievable.

>> scientists believe mars may have looked a lot like earth with blue skies warm temperatures. >> we see the record in the soils today. >> collecting material in the upper atmosphere will give them a better understanding over the red planet's history. >> we expect to learn how the modern mars works in detail to see its climate state, to understand how the atmosphere was lost to space, how mars may have lost a magnetic field, to take that information and map it back in time. >> the journey will be long. it will have to travel ten months and millions of miles. but the journey and the $661 million price tag are worth it, especially if it can unlock the big question, about life of exist on mars. chad meyers, cnn, atlanta. >> today kaiser permanente will close down an inpatient facility.

young people requiring hospitalization will have to go to the oakland center. they said 99% of the chefs provide is through outpatient services. it is just the pediatric unit that is shutting down. social media can be a really powerful force for change. we've seen it time and time again. recently a mother in san jose used social media to reach out to abc7 news anchor cheryl jennings for help. she said her daughter's fiancee needs surgery to save his sight, and the family can't afford it. so cheryl sent the message out on facebook and twitter, not expecting anything really, but what happened next turned out to be a miracle. >> this is the family who desperately needed help and asked for it through social media. they had an urgent plea to save the eyesight of william fleming. he and his fiancee want him to be able to see their five children grow up. william wants to continue to work to support the family. but he has a rare eye disease

that's causing him to slowly lose his vision. it's called caricontonis. it affects one in 500 people. >> it's like look through a dirty window. >> he wears hard large contact lenses so he can see, work and drive. he's a former college football player that's now a caregiver for his fiancee's brother, bo, who has cerebral palsy. >> they talked to a number of doctors about his condition. they recommended corn yeah transplants. >> but those are so invasive and painful. the recovery time is a year for each eye. >> their research led them to a doctor in beverly hills who has created a procedure for correcting the damage but it

costs $18,000 and is not covered by insurance. society family placed an appeal for money on the giveforward.org website with little success. that's when her mother sent me an e-mail through facebook that said could you help me get the story for donations out. he's a care provider for my son who has c. p.. >> i thought let's try to get somebody out there that could help and then i thought of you guys because that's all i watch is abc7 news. >> i sent out a tweet saying an abc7 viewer sent us this heartbreakingy for help. just a few days later i received an e-mail from the publicist from the doctor who william wants to perform the surgery. the e-mail said someone just saw your tweet and is interested in helping william with the cost of his procedure. i wanted to call william right away but the doctor wanted to tell william himself so i kept the secret and went to the family home in san jose.

we skyped in while the man called dr. brian. you can see the shock on their faces as they try to process the doctor's good news. >> an anonymous donor has stepped in and was very moved by hearing about you and they are actually going to take care of the procedure for you and you will be able to have the procedure. >> oh, my god, seriously? oh, my god! that is so awesome! >> thank you! >> thank you! >> thank you so much! >> there are so many calls for help on social media that won't get answered but in william's case somebody stepped up and said i will help you. that will make all the difference for william and his family and they are heading to los angeles soon for william's surgery. >> what do you think about that? >> i'm so, so -- this is so great! >> thank you! >> thank you, thank you! >> cheryl jennings, abc7 news.

protest when they call vanity sizing by clothing stores. they are part of a group about face shown here in a previous protest of victoria secret. the teenage girl says they size apparel to manipulate emotions and empty wall let's. their motto is real size, not lies. they will be protesting at market and powell street where there's always a crowd at the cable car turn around. they will ask people to sign pegs calling for label changes at the gap and other clothing retailers. bay area players and coaches from the junior giants program were honored yesterday. willie mccovey honored the honorees at mill williamsly mays plaza in san francisco. more than 125 willie mack award winners celebrated their achievements in confidence, integrity, leadership and teamwork. congratulations to them.

>> one city is getting a new beach, actually an old one restored. they are working around the clock to recreate 8,000 feet of beach in alameda that's gradually eroded away. it's a huge endeavor.

laura anthony has an up-close look at the process. >> reporter: putting back what nature has washed away over the last 25 years on crown beach in almeda. as the giant pipe pours tons of wet sand on the shoreline and bulldozers move it around to rebuild the beach to its original 1987 footprint it. is a man-made beach and as you see it's become very their roam this will restore it to its original engineered footprint and everyone will get a chance to enjoy the beautiful crown and almeda beaches. >> the sand is being piped in through a pipeline that extends from a barge sitting about a half-mile offshore. the material was vacuumed from the floor of the bay near angel island. in the end, 82,000 cubic yards of sand will be imported here to rebuild the beach that's a mile and a half in lent.

an alameda resident stopped by on his bike to take some pictures of the process. there's no trucks. i mean, it would take an enormous number of trucks going up and down our street here to do it any other way. they are doing it right, i think. >> the construction of crown beach is expected to be done by the end of this year and should last two decades or more. in almeda, laura anthony, abc7 news. in sports both the raiders and the 49ers are on the road today. undrafted rookie matt mccloin will start as quarterback for the silver in black in houston in place of the injured terrelle pryor. tick off 10 :00 a.m. the 49ers return to the superdome against the saints. kickoff in new orleans, 1:25. big game week is here for stanford and cal but next saturday's game down on the farm lost some of its lifter or the cardinals were upset last night by usc. here's sports director larry

that we will be looking at a quiet start to the day with patchy fog. then sunny conditions with temperatures pretty mild. we will see increasing clouds tomorrow in advance of a system that will bring rain showers through tuesday and wednesday. maybe even possibly lingering into thursday. so it's high pressure sitting off the coast that remains throughout the day today and tomorrow. we will see the increasing clouds ahead of this system here. and the timing on it, well, unfortunately it will mess of your tuesday morning commute. even as early as late monday up in the north bay, sonoma county and cloverdale will get the wet weather and through the overnight hours the boundary sags south and by tuesday morning we have showers around the bay. the emphasis and the heaviest rain staying north. still we will get the wet weather throughout the afternoon commute on tuesday around the bay into the east bay, the santa cruz mountains, and by wednesday still looking kind of wet. you will notice that we have the darker shades and that bullseye

further up to the north where we could see maybe an inch around the coastal hills. anywhere from a quarter inch to a half-inch more likely the rest of the bay. 59 today. kind of cool in monterey with upper 60s in los angeles and mid-50s in the northern sierra. snow level pretty high with this system. it will be a warm system so above 6500 feet. 64 today in oakland with low 60s returning for fremont. 65 in san jose. so after that fog burns back it will be breezy and sunny today. tomorrow look for temperatures to be a few degrees cooler with more clouds. here comes the rain on tuesday. showers will linger into wednesday and even a chance of rain perhaps on thursday. then we are sunny and milder for the end of the week into the weekend. >> sounds pretty good. >> yeah, all right. did you know that one of our buddies, abc7 news anchor dan ashley, has other talents? up next wait until you hear him sing the national anthem at last
